Pythagorean Theorem Model – a² + b² = c² Water & Sand Demonstration Kit

Rotate the disk and watch sand or water from the two smaller squares exactly fill the largest one: a hands-on, visible demonstration of a² + b² = c².

Description

Make the Pythagorean theorem visible

Students often memorize a² + b² = c² without ever seeing why it works. This model builds a transparent square chamber on each side of a right triangle. Fill the two smaller squares, turn the disk, and their contents flow into the square on the hypotenuse and fill it completely, turning an abstract formula into something learners can watch, discuss, and repeat.

How the demonstration works

  • The three chambers share the same depth, so the amount each one holds is proportional to its square area.
  • Fill squares a and b, close the plug, and rotate the disk on its stand.
  • The contents of a² and b² transfer into c² and fill it.
  • Run it with the included experiment sand, or with clean water added slowly through the dropper.

What's in the kit

  • Transparent three-square chamber
  • Rotating base disk and support stand
  • Large and small O-rings, plus a plug
  • 9 capped screws and a screwdriver
  • Dropper
  • Bag of experiment sand

Great for

  • Middle- and high-school geometry lessons and teacher demonstrations
  • STEM and STEAM activities, math clubs, and science fairs
  • Homeschool and parent-child learning
  • Linking geometry to real work: checking right angles with the 3-4-5 rule, roof pitch, diagonal braces, and surveying

Good to know

  • It is a visual demonstration of the area relationship, not a formal proof, which makes it a good starting point for discussing Euclid's proof and others.
  • Assemble with an adult and tighten the screws evenly so the O-rings seal.
  • If you use water, fill slowly to avoid bubbles, then drain and dry the model after use.
  • Contains small parts; keep them away from young children.
