Shipping, Customs & Duties Notice
For the logistics services we use, shipments to most major developed countries are delivered door to door, and the shipping fee includes customs clearance, duties, and taxes. If a particular destination, route, or carrier requires the buyer to pay import duties/taxes separately or provide information for customs declaration or clearance, we will contact you before shipment and will only ship after confirming the required information with you. Please order with confidence and do not worry about unexpected customs charges after purchase.
Version 2 Update
Version 2 keeps the same compact Apple II gamepad concept while improving the analog control circuitry and calibration. The X and Y axes now provide a more even response across the thumbstick travel.
We also corrected several small tolerance-related issues found in the original version. On a small number of V1 units, component tolerances could prevent an analog axis from consistently reaching the full minimum or maximum value at the end of its physical travel. V2 improves the endpoint range and zero/full-scale calibration so the Apple II can more reliably detect the complete analog movement.
Each V2 unit is assembled and tested before shipment. General operation, connector compatibility, button layout, and the familiar SNES-style form remain essentially unchanged from V1.
What is it?
A compact SNES-style gamepad for Apple II, implementing the Apple II's 556 timer-based analog joystick logic with a modern thumbstick and two action buttons. It provides a comfortable modern controller format for classic Apple II games while preserving the analog input behavior expected by the computer.
Why did you make it?
Original Apple II paddles and joysticks are increasingly rare and expensive, and many depend on 150 kOhm potentiometers that are no longer commonly manufactured. This project brings modern controller ergonomics to vintage gaming and provides a practical replacement for aging original controllers.
Version 2 was developed after additional production and real-world testing. The revised analog circuit gives more consistent axis scaling and more dependable minimum and maximum readings without changing the straightforward plug-in experience.
What makes it special?
Unlike basic digital DB9 adapters, this GamePad provides a true analog thumbstick experience with two trigger buttons. The response is designed around the Apple II's timing-based analog input, allowing compatible games to read gradual directional movement rather than only simple on/off directions.
V2 adds:
More even analog response across both axes
Improved zero and full-scale endpoint calibration
Better tolerance for normal component variation
More consistent minimum and maximum readings
Individual functional testing before shipment
The same compact SNES-style enclosure and familiar controls
The project is based on an open-hardware Apple II gamepad design with KiCad, FreeCAD, and 3D-printable case resources available through the linked repository.
