A motor you can watch think
This kit builds a magnet-wheel motor on a small blue cart. Magnets sit around the rim of a big red wheel, and a coil stands at the top. Each time a magnet passes the reed switch, the switch closes, the coil is energised and its magnetic field pushes the magnet on; then the switch opens again. The wheel keeps spinning in a steady rhythm and an LED flashes with every pulse.

- Electromagnets: a coil carrying current becomes a magnet
- Magnetic repulsion: like poles push each other apart
- Reed switches: how a magnet can switch a circuit on and off without touching it
- Timing: why the pulse has to arrive at just the right moment to keep the wheel turning
What you'll do
- Assemble the cart, the upright frame and the wheel
- Fit the magnets into the wheel rim and mount the coil
- Wire the coil, reed switch, LED and battery holder
- Give the wheel a push and watch it keep itself spinning
